Australian experience highlights the wider right-to-repair challenge

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association has called for improvements to Australia’s Motor Vehicle Information Scheme to ensure it keeps pace with connected and software-controlled vehicles.

The association says access to repair information must be practical, affordable, timely and usable—not merely theoretically available. Its recommendations include improved access to electronic service records, telematics and repair-critical vehicle data, clearer pricing requirements, stronger enforcement and wider vehicle coverage.

Why this matters for Repair Certifiers

Australia’s experience provides useful context for the New Zealand choice-of-repairer discussion. Access to written repair instructions is only part of the issue. Software authorisation, component pairing, diagnostic access, digital service records and security-controlled vehicle functions may also determine whether a repair can be completed and verified correctly.

AAAA: Keep the promise—right to repair must deliver real choice for motorists
