What is the Repair VIRM* (NZTA Light Vehicle Repair Certification VIRM)?

The Repair VIRM is a manual Repair Certifiers must follow when checking and approving vehicle repairs.

It explains:

  • What Repair Certifiers are responsible for.
  • How to check that repairs meet safety standards.
  • The process for inspecting and certifying repaired vehicles.
  • Extra guidelines for specific repair situations.

Repair Certifiers use the Repair VIRM to make sure vehicles are fixed properly and safe to drive before they can be registered for the road.

The Repair VIRM has three main parts:

  1. Introduction – which explains the duties and responsibilities of the Repair Certifier, the inspection and certification process, complaints procedures, requirements for inspection premises and equipment, and the appointment of Repair Certifiers.
  2. Technical -which covers the requirements for the certification of repairs to individual light vehicle components, structures, and systems.
  3. Technical Bulletins – which provide extended explanatory material for specific issues, components, or vehicles.
